What is the Hunter Sports High School Hockey Program?

The program provides a unique opportunity for talented Hockey players aged between 12 – 18 years within the Hunter Region to combine effectively academic and sporting excellence.

The program includes:

  • Performance skills
  • Health and fitness management
  • Sport science education
  • Skills development in both practical and theoretical aspects of Hockey
  • Video analysis
  • Fitness assessments twice a year at Balance Health Club
  • Competitions with other Sports High Schools
  • Hunter Region and NSWCHS Competitions

How does the program work?

Students participating in the program will practice two sessions per week at Newcastle International Hockey Centre under the guidance of David Willott. Students will also participate in competitions within the group and against other Sports High Schools. Opportunities will also exist to attend professional competitions as spectators when available.

How does it link to Association/Community Hockey?

Participating in the program will help students to develop their hockey game and their interest in the sport within school time, as a school subject. This should lead to enhanced results at club level and recognition in the wider community. Students will be encouraged and supported to participate in a wide variety of tournaments.

Who are the Hockey Coaches?

The squad will be instructed by professional coach David Willott who is Head Coach of North Hockey Club, NSW Under 18 Boys Hockey Team Coach. He has a level 2 Accreditation and is coach at the Hunter Academy of Sport.

Nigel Hogan will be the Targeted Sports Coordinator. He is a former NSW player.

Students involved in the program should participate in competitions as members of a local club and undertake regular training outside of school hours. Students should be able to display a reasonable level of ability and a high level of interest in developing their Hockey skills.

How do I apply?

To be part of this program prospective students need to obtain an application package from our web page. Students must undertake a trial, and provide supporting documentation as detailed in the application package. Note that students may be in any year, and acceptance and ongoing placement in the program is based on continued academic effort, acceptable attendance levels and an excellent behaviour record. Students are supported by a school environment which caters for the academic and welfare needs of the talented athlete, allowing students to gain a quality education whilst still pursuing their sporting dreams.
