What is the Hunter Sports High School AFL Program?
The program provides a unique opportunity for talented and committed players to combine academic and sporting excellence. Its goals are to provide players with the knowledge, skills and understanding of what it takes to make the professional leagues of AFL.
The program includes:
- 2 x 1.5 hour training sessions per week for 40 weeks.
- Opportunities to compete in CHS Competitions at Zone, Regional and State levels.
- Specialised skills development.
- Individual programs for players.
- Goal setting and self-monitoring skills.
- Fitness Assessment twice a year at Balance Health Club.
How does the Program work?
- The program (HSHS AFL Program) follows the National curriculum established by the AFL.
- The program will be focusing on the skill development of players in order to better prepare them for entry into the state league.
- There is a heavy emphasis on individual offensive and defensive fundamentals and also teaches team principles of play.
- All players receive introductory information and instruction on sports nutrition, psychology, recovery, strength, agility and injury prevention.
- Players have the opportunity to gain certificates in coaching and refereeing.
How does the Program link to AFL clubs?
All players are encouraged to participate in competitions conducted by AFL (NSW/ACT) and undertake regular training outside of school hours. The program complements programs conducted by all local AFL associations and clubs.
Through our AFL network and relationships with National and State coaches, all players are provided with a multitude of opportunities to enhance their AFL careers.
Who are the AFL Coaches?
Sean Love – Program Coordinator
Les Crawford is currently coaching the program for one session a week. Since 2006 Les has been the NSWACT State Under 18 and Under 16 Strength and Conditioning Coach. In 2010 he will be working with the NSWACT AFL Academy program and forms part of the State Talented Player Coaching Academy. Les has also worked with the Western Bulldogs teaching speed development to the Bulldog scholarship players.
Craig Golledge – AFL NSW Development Officer. Coordinates the Thursday sessions in conjunction with a number of other accredited representative coaches and Sports Consultants.

The program is implemented with a full academic curriculum, with School Certificate recognition and linked HSC courses. Students are supported by a school environment which caters for the academic and welfare needs of the talented athlete, allowing students to gain a quality education whilst still pursuing their sporting dreams.
How do I apply?
To be part of this program prospective students need to obtain an application package from our web page. Students must participate in an AFL competition and undertake a trial, and provide supporting documentation as detailed in the application package. Note that students may be in any year, and acceptance and ongoing placement in the program is based on continued academic effort, acceptable attendance levels and an excellent behaviour record.
Students are supported by a school environment which caters for the academic and welfare needs of the talented athlete, allowing students to gain a quality education whilst still pursuing their sporting dreams.
