WELFARE

Hunter Sports High offers a highly structured and extremely caring student support program. Weekly meetings of the School Welfare Team monitor the emotional, intellectual, physical and interpersonal development of students and identify any particular needs of individuals.

The recognition of student achievements is an integral feature of the Welfare Program. The School’s Merit Award Scheme provides public recognition of student achievement in all aspects of school life.

PEER MEDIATION

Adolescent developmental stages include intense conflict, both within the individual, with their peers and with adults. Often these conflicts are in the school environment. Traditionally, their resolution has been the responsibility of the school staff. This style of solution most often works at a superficial level rather than resolving the issue or addressing the individual needs of the student.

One strategy that can address the resolution of conflict within the school environment involves the practice of mediation. Mediation is the process where a neutral third party works with the disputants and together, finds a workable solution to the conflict.

The Peer Mediation Program involves the selection and training of a select group of students. After training these students are available to mediate disputes and conflicts which take place within the school environment.

How do I ask for mediation?

  • Any staff member may refer a possible mediation to the Peer Mediation Coordinator (Mrs Clarke).
  • Students may approach a Peer Mediator or the Coordinator to arrange a mediation.
  • The Coordinator will as soon as practicable arrange a mediation.
  • Conversation between mediators and the disputants remains confidential at all times.
